Packaging and labelling standards

Exported goods must meet Ghana Standards Authority marking rules and the destination market's labelling law, with food and cosmetics also meeting FDA labelling requirements.

Overview

Packaging and labelling do double duty: they must satisfy Ghana's own standards and, more importantly for you, the rules of the market you are selling into. The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) is the national standards and conformity-assessment body and the WTO TBT enquiry point, so it is the place to confirm the applicable Ghanaian standard for your product's marking, net-content declaration and safety information. For food, beverages and cosmetics, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) sets labelling content: product name, ingredients, net weight, batch/lot number, manufacture and expiry dates, storage conditions, and name and address of the manufacturer. If your buyer is in the EU, UK or US, you must additionally meet their labelling law (language, allergen, nutrition and origin marking). Good practice is to design one label that meets both the Ghanaian baseline and the strictest destination requirement, and to use packaging robust enough for tropical humidity and long sea transit.

    Mandatory label content

    For food and cosmetics include product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch/lot, manufacture and expiry dates, storage and manufacturer address.

    Language and destination rules

    Add the language(s) and specific declarations (allergens, nutrition, origin) required by the importing market, not just Ghanaian norms.

    Applicable Ghana standard

    Confirm the relevant Ghanaian/international standard for your product with the Ghana Standards Authority before printing packaging.

    Traceability marking

    Ensure batch codes and dates are legible and durable so the consignment can be traced and verified at destination.

    Fit-for-transit packaging

    Use packaging that withstands tropical humidity, handling and long sea freight to avoid spoilage and rejection.
