Trade agreements and preferential market access

Verified 路 22 Apr 2026

Jamaica's membership of CARICOM, the CARIFORUM-EU and UK EPAs, the WTO and preferential schemes with the US and Canada gives exporters duty advantages if they can prove origin.

Overview

Jamaica sits inside a web of trade agreements that can make your product cheaper for buyers than a competitor's from a non-preferential country. Within CARICOM, goods that qualify as originating move duty-free across the regional single market. The CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement gives essentially duty-free, quota-free access to the EU for qualifying goods, and a parallel UK-CARIFORUM EPA preserves that access to the United Kingdom after Brexit. Canada extends preferences under CARIBCAN, and the United States has historically offered preferential access under the Caribbean Basin Initiative. As a WTO member, Jamaica's exports also enjoy Most-Favoured-Nation treatment in over 160 markets. The catch in every case is rules of origin: the benefit only applies if you can prove the goods were genuinely produced or sufficiently transformed in Jamaica, evidenced by the correct certificate of origin. Choosing the agreement that fits your destination and getting the paperwork right is what turns a preference on paper into a real price advantage.

Key requirements

  1. 1

Identify the right agreement for your market

Match your destination to the applicable deal: CARICOM regionally, EPA for the EU/UK, CARIBCAN for Canada, MFN via WTO elsewhere.

  2. 2

    Meet the rules of origin

Ensure your product satisfies the specific origin rule (wholly obtained or sufficiently transformed) for that agreement.

  3. 3

Obtain the matching certificate of origin

Secure the correct proof: EUR.1 for the EPAs, CARICOM certificate of origin for regional trade.

  4. 4

    Keep origin records

Maintain supporting records so the certificate can be verified by the importing customs authority if challenged.
