Packaging and Labelling

Overview

Kenyan export goods must be packaged and labelled to satisfy both Kenyan standards administered by KEBS and the specific requirements of the destination market, which are frequently stricter. For food and agricultural products, labels generally must show the product name, net quantity, ingredient and nutrition information where required, country of origin (Made in Kenya), batch or lot code, and production and expiry dates. Horticultural and fresh produce shipped to the EU must additionally meet marketing-standards and traceability rules, and packaging must protect the cold chain. Packaging materials, especially wood, must comply with international phytosanitary standards (ISPM 15 heat-treatment or fumigation marking) to be accepted abroad. For a small exporter the safest approach is to build the label to the importing country's rules first, then confirm the Kenyan standard with KEBS, and to check destination requirements on the ITC Market Access Map and the EU's ePing / market-access databases before printing.
