Compliance requirements: registering as an exporter
Before your first shipment you must be a properly registered Jamaican business with a Taxpayer Registration Number and be enrolled with Customs to file declarations electronically.
Overview
Every Jamaican exporter starts as a registered business. You need your company registered with the Companies Office of Jamaica (or a registered business name for a sole trader), a Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) from Tax Administration Jamaica, and a Customs Client (registration) number so you can lodge export declarations in the ASYCUDA World system. Most small exporters use a licensed customs broker for the first shipments, but you still register in your own name so the goods and the export earnings are attributed to you. The Jamaica Trade Information Portal is the single place that walks you through the full step-by-step for your specific product, and JAMPRO offers free export-readiness guidance for MSMEs. Getting these registrations in order early avoids the most common cause of stuck shipments: a mismatch between your business papers, your TRN and your Customs profile.
Key requirements
- 1
Registered legal entity
Register your company or business name with the Companies Office of Jamaica; sole traders register a business name before trading for export.
- 2
Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN)
Obtain a TRN for the business from Tax Administration Jamaica; it identifies you on every customs and tax document.
- 3
Customs client registration
Enrol with the Jamaica Customs Agency to get a client number and access to ASYCUDA World for lodging export declarations (C82/eSAD).
- 4
Product-specific clearances
Check the Jamaica Trade Information Portal for any permit, inspection or certificate your specific HS code needs before you ship.
- 5
Use a licensed broker where required
Commercial exports are normally declared through a licensed customs broker; keep their details on file with your Customs profile.
